Culture and creativity in "lab"

"Culture has everything to do with Education and Research" - were the words of Dr. Rui Parreira, Algarve's Regional Department of Culture, at the opening speech of the "Innovation Lab for Cultural and Creative Industries" developed at University of Algarve, in 28th and 29th June.

The first day of the Lab was opened by the Algarve's Regional Department of Culture that presented, by Dr. Rui Parreira, the work being developed within the Strategic Plan for Culture in the Algarve.

Also during the morning, the professor Maria Cabral spoke about the importance of the University in the Culture, and by the end of the day, in the last panel, Professor Miriam Tavares, director of the CIAC - Centre for Innovation in Arts and Communications, spoke about the role of the Arts in the Creative Industries.

During the day were presented and discussed some examples of promising or already successful projects. In the performing arts, the company "Te-atrito" was presented by Rita Neves. In the regional cuisine and appreciation of the territory's cultural heritage the project "Algarvian Tertulia" was presented by João Amaro. The illustrator Tiago da Silva told his journey and presented his work, that is currently recognized and valued internationally. Pedro Costa talked about the Clean Feed's record label that has received several international awards for outstanding work in promoting jazz.

On the second day the Lab had a more interactive format and the participants were involved in one exercise of creation of ideas and counted with the participation of consultants in the areas of Creativity, Industrial Protection, Digital Marketing and Business Plan to support the structuring of their creative ideas.

Almost 70% of the participants of the Creative Ideas' Lab that responded to the questionnaire of satisfaction considered it 'very useful', giving full marks to the relevance of the theme and the importance of the subjects covered.

The Lab was held under the project KnowInG - Knowledge Intelligence and Innovation for a Sustainable Growth, which is an European project that aims to promote the "knowledge economy" and to strengthen the cooperation between public entities, centers of innovation and economic actors to create new territorial development policies.

Within KnowInG project, CRIA - Division of Entrepreneurship and Technology Transfer of the University of Algarve, provides a helpdesk to support entrepreneurs and internationalization of companies and operators of cultural and creative industries.
